Where Should You Visit When in Park Rapids?
Park Rapids may be a smaller town, but it’s packed with charm, personality, and plenty of things to see and do. Whether you’re strolling through our nostalgic downtown or checking out some of the hidden gems around town, there’s something for everyone here.
1. Explore Downtown Park Rapids
One of the most iconic spots in Park Rapids is our Main Street. It’s not just the unique center-lane parking that makes it memorable—Main Street is filled with locally owned shops, great food, and a welcoming, small-town vibe.
Start with a sweet treat at Aunt Belle’s Confectionery, famous for its handmade caramels and fudges. Then swing by The Minnesota Fountain, one of the original shops downtown, where you can grab an ice cream cone or sit down for a sandwich or flatbread from their updated menu.
Need a caffeine fix? Stop into Belle Café—a cozy, inviting space perfect for catching up with friends or getting some work done. Right next door, you'll find Beagle and Wolf Books & Bindery, an indie bookstore full of treasures. Browse the wide range of genres and discover local authors you won’t find anywhere else.
Honestly, the best way to experience Main Street is on foot. Set aside 3–4 hours to leisurely walk the stretch, pop into the shops, and grab a bite. It’s not a long walk, but you’ll want time to explore all the unique stops along the way.
2. Get Outdoors
Looking to enjoy the fresh air? Park Rapids has plenty of outdoor fun, whether you want to take it slow or stay active.
Check out the brand-new Birdies Mini Golf, an 18-hole course with a fun western theme. For a full day on the links, head to Headwaters Golf Course, which also features a restaurant and bar, perfect for relaxing after your round.
Just 15 minutes from town is Itasca State Park, home to the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River. It’s a must-visit for nature lovers and history buffs alike, with scenic trails and plenty to explore.
If you’re staying closer to town, Heartland Park is a great family-friendly option. It features a beach area, a large playground, and access to the Heartland Trail—a beautiful multi-use trail that winds through the nearby towns of Dorset, Nevis, Akeley, and ends in Walker. Whether you’re biking, running, or just soaking in the views, it’s a fantastic way to experience the area’s natural beauty and small-town charm.
There are so many more amazing places to explore here in Park Rapids, but I’ll leave you with a little intrigue for next time. There’s always more to share about this great town!
